In the not too distant future, Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Nondenominational megachurches and other friends may owe the Emergent Church a nice “thank you” card.

Dear E.C.,

Thanks so much for chatting not long ago.  Sorry it took so long to get our attention, but we’re so glad you did.  Who would have thought that a simple conversation could yield so much fruit?  We were just walking along as we always had, when all of a sudden, we ran into you.  You looked familiar–we saw in you hundreds upon hundreds, maybe even thousands upon thousands, of faces that we used to see all the time, but that we haven’t seen in a while.  What’s more, we saw their children as well.  It was good to hear that they’re still around–we were getting a little worried.
We were surprised to find you walking in the other direction when we encountered you, and thanks so much for not being too offended when we blurted out, “Where do you think you’re going?”  We didn’t see much value in that, but hearing you talk with such passion about how badly you wanted to get there made us listen.  We hadn’t heard passion like that in a while.  Frankly, we were surprised to find the conversation invigorating.
We were reminded of times past when we were headed to the same place you were going.  We were reminded of people from our past, even our founders, who were as desperate to get there as you seem to be.  Over time, while we hung their pictures everywhere, we seemed to forget their words, their personalities, and their hearts.
As we forgot them, we just sort of started wandering around.  We would learn about new destinations that sounded nice and warm and luxurious, and so we would head off in the new direction, only to hear about an even nicer and warmer and more luxurious place before we got there, so we’d change direction.  We haven’t gotten anywhere in quite some time.  (However, it’s been good exercise, because we’re a lot lighter than we used to be.)
You’ll be pleased to know that we haven’t been able to get this chance meeting out of our head.  You’ve gotten us thinking about the days when we were headed to the same place.  We have a lot of momentum, but we’re beginning to turn the rudder so that we can turn around and have a look at the place ourselves.  Some of us are afraid, and so the turn has been slow, but the turn is being made, all because of our chance meeting.  So glad we ran into you.  We look forward to having more conversations in the future.  Maybe we can even work together again someday.

WIth many thanks,

M,B,P,C,E,L,Nm, etc…
