    Pretty good insights from the Harvard guy. Surely the cause of Christ was not helped in America by it’s association with the political right. In a nation that is incresingly politically polarized, it’s no wonder that, if the church is percieved as “taking a side” in the political discourse, it will alienate half the country.

    The church is not at its best as a lobying group. The church is at it’s best when it welcomes strangers, comforts the mourning, and cares for the poor. The church as lobbyist is like asking a nurse to fix your air conditioning. They might know a little about air conditioning, but is that really the best and most effective use of their calling and gifts?

    I agree with you. In addition to its calling to be a friend to the poor and disenfranchised, it also needs to speak prophetically to the government and when it cozies up to one political party (as conservative evangelical churches have often done with Republicans and national mainline protestant churches have often done with Democrats) then you have a problem.
